It's estimated that up to 70% of American households suffer from mold and mildew infestation - a problem most homes grapple with. But how do you know if it's black mold or mildew that is affecting your home? And are they the same?

Black mold and mildew may look similar, especially to the untrained eye. However, they are different organisms with varying levels of toxicity. Here’s how to tell them apart, and how to effectively
get rid of mold and mildew for good.

What is Black Mold?

Black mold, scientifically known as Stachybotrys chartarum, is a greenish-black fungus that thrives in moist and humid environments. It’s most commonly found in bathrooms, basements, attics and other parts of the home where moisture tends to accumulate. Black mold requires wetness for 24 to 48 hours before it can start to grow.

What is Mildew?

Mildew, on the other hand, consists of white or gray patches that appear fuzzy or powdery in texture. It also requires a moist environment to form but typically grows much faster than black mold. Mildew tends to grow on items like fabrics, leather goods, paper, and walls.

Is Black Mold the Same as Mildew?

The short answer is no. While black mold and mildew often look similar, they are different fungi with varying levels of toxicity. Black mold is more dangerous because it can produce toxins known as mycotoxins. These toxins can cause respiratory illness and other health problems if inhaled or ingested by humans. Mildew on the other hand, is not known to produce toxins and is generally considered harmless.

How to Prevent Mold and Mildew

Mold and mildew can be very difficult to eradicate, so it’s important to take steps immediately to prevent their growth. Here are some tips for preventing mold and mildew in the home:

  • Keep your home well-ventilated by opening windows and using exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen.
  • Control humidity indoors by using a dehumidifier in moist areas of the home.
  • Promptly remove water spills or leaks from walls, floors, and carpets.
  • Clean bathrooms regularly with mold-killing products.
  • Reallocate furniture and items away from damp spots on the floor to aid air circulation.
  • Wash fabrics and linens regularly with hot water and detergent to remove mildew spores.

By following these steps, you can help protect your family from the dangers of mold and mildew growth in the home. With some effort and vigilance, you can keep your house healthy and safe from unwanted toxins.
